WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -- A person was sent to a hospital for a medical emergency after authorities stopped a vehicle in response to a property damage incident.
The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said it happened at about 3:50 p.m. on Sunday when deputies responded to a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of a property damage accident at Illinois Route 13 and Cambria Road.
Multiple 911 calls came in stating the vehicle was going east and had some damage to the rear tire and smoking.
Deputies found the vehicle near Greenbriar Road along Route 13 and tried to pull the vehicle over. However, the car kept going at a low speed, even though the emergency lights were on and an audible siren was alerting the driver.
The sheriff's office said the driver was having difficulty staying on road and the rear tire appeared to "locked up" and broken. The tire was also giving off lots of smoke as well.
Deputies saw the driver and said the person didn't appear to be aware what was going on.
The car came to a stop after authorities executed a rolling road block along Route 13 and Division Street. WCSO said the maneuver was successful and did not damage the patrol cars or dealt any further damage to the vehicle they stopped.
Authorities ordered the driver out of the vehicle but they said the person seemed confused. Deputies then went into the car and helped the driver get out.
"During this initial conversation it became apparent that the driver was suffering from a medical emergency, WCSO said. " An ambulance was summoned and it was discovered the driver was suffering from a diabetic condition."
The sheriff's office said the driver was taken to an area hospital where they are reported to be in good condition.
The Carterville Police Department assisted the Williamson County Sheriff's Office in this incident.
