Scott City Fire Response

SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- A family is without a home after a fire destroyed their house in Scott City on Thursday.

Scott City Fire

The Scott City Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the 300 block of Kelley Avenue. Officials arrive around 4:12 p.m. and instinctively upgraded the situation to a working fire classification. This alerted neighboring fire departments to the situation, bringing Cape Girardeau Fire Department, N.B.C. Fire Protection District, Chaffee Fire Department and Gordonville for the air support unit to the scene to help.

Fire officials say in the garage and that smoke flowed from all sides of the home. Officials worked with the Scott City Public Works Director to connect to a hydrant.

The issue quickly escalated as officials say they could not easily access the garage due to the amount of fire. The situation was reclassified as a "second alarm,' which brought the Benton Fire Department, the Scott County Rural Fire Protection District and the Oran Fire Protection District to the situation.

Officials in time managed to contain the fire. The garage remained an issue, though, as the fire department says "hotspots" were contained under the family's items.

JAC3 Contracting helped the Scott City Fire Department move the belongings with a skid steer, giving firefighters the chance to extinguish the spots.

The fire department says no residents were inside at the time of firefighter arrival. The destruction of the home reportedly displaced two adults and three children.

The fire department says an investigation remains ongoing into the cause of the fire.
