CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) --- More than 7,000 Illinois workers are owed five million dollars in back pay by the U.S. Department of Labor, and they might not even know about it.

"No, I had no clue about any of this," says Nicole Wagner from Johnston City.

The DOL created a website to connect people to possible back pay.

"I'm not in that position," Ken Curry says. "If they owed me money, I would want it, and they ought to come through and pay it."

Curry says he's a retired correctional officer. The DOL says people in the restaurant, home health care, agriculture, and construction.

Back pay is the difference between the employee's pay and what they should have received.

And it was collected by the labor department to get the money back to them.

To see if you're owed money, search

Workers Owed Wages

Scroll and type in your employer's name and state, or type in keywords like roof, even LLC. or Inc. works.

We found several local businesses on the DOL's website, including some across Missouri and Kentucky and cities like Carbondale, Herrin, and Anna.

Once you find the company, enter your name to see if you are owed any money.

The Department of Labor says workers have three years to claim their back pay before it's handed over to the U.S. Treasury. This includes determining if you are owed money from current or previous employers.

The Department says minimum wage, migrant workers, and younger workers are typically where the owed wages come from.Â
