SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Drivers in Illinois can now submit claims for financial compensation for car damage caused by potholes on state-owned roads.Â
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will accept responsibility for damage caused on roads under state jurisdiction. Drivers with damage from locally owned roads not by the state should contact the local government agency in charge of them.
Contact the closest IDOT office to the site of the damage to receive a form for filing. The list of IDOT offices is available on the organization's .
IDOT may reject a claim if the following situations are true:
- The damage came as a direct result of weather conditions and events
- The damage occurred due to another driver
- The road conditions or debris was not properly reported
Upon receiving a claim, IDOT will begin a report to determine if that driver is eligible for compensation. The entire process could take between 90 and 120 days. If the damage is severe enough to require immediate attention, IDOT asks drivers to contact their insurance company.Â
