ULLIN, Ill. -- Illinois State Police celebrated one of its K-9 officers as he reached the end of his tenure with the department.

ISP Troop 10 posted to Facebook on Thursday to mark the retirement of Canine Dax. Dax served with the department since 2015 alongside Trooper Key.

Officer Dax Retirement

Dax served the lower seven counties of Illinois -- Alexander, Pulaski, Union, Johnson, Pope, Massac and Hardin. The ISP says he provided full services and specialized in narcotic odor detection, tracking, article searches and criminal apprehension.

Dax and Key dedicated a portion of their years together to crowd control during civil unrest and manhunts, specifically at protests in Cairo and Anna. Dax also donated his time to school and event demonstrations of K-9 officer training.

Dax benefited the ISP in drug searches at schools and offices. The pup was lucky enough to help the ISP SWAT Team, US Marshal Service, FBI, DEA, ATF, Zone 7 Troop and other agencies.

ISP highlighted Dax's discovery of about 750 pounds of cannabis, five pounds of cocaine, three pounds of heroin, 12 firearms, fentanyl and over $625,000.

"K9 Dax was a proven asset to the ISP, and his contributions will be profoundly missed," his troop said.
