CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- John A. Logan College is gearing up to reveal a new mascot.Â
The school announced on Tuesday that it recently developed designs for a horse mascot that will honor General John A. Logan. However, the staff is looking to the school's community to help with the final point, the horse's name.Â
Starting August 12, students and community members will have the chance to vote to decide the horse's name. The poll will include four names the school believes align with Logan's time as general.Â
“Historians have mentioned a couple of different horses used by General Logan throughout his life, so rather than choosing between one of the horses, we decided it would be fun to get our students and the community involved in selecting a name, said President of John A. Logan College Dr. Kirk Overstreet.
The school has said the mascot's image will be revealed during welcome activities beginning on August 9. Voting will continue throughout the fall semester with a final name announcement coming at the kickoff for Spring 2025.Â
The university hopes the mascot will serve as a tribute to Logan. Representatives with the school say the horse will appear similar to the types of horses used by Logan in the Civil War.Â
Following his time as a Union Army General, Logan went on to serve in the US Senate, where he pushed for education and the founding of Memorial Day.
“We are excited to introduce our new mascot as a tribute to General Logan’s remarkable achievements and commitment to education, said Overstreet. “The horse symbolizes the courage and dedication that we strive to instill in our students, and we believe it will inspire our college community for years to come.
