MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL)-- You'll see a new addition at Murphysboro High School. It's new signage created by the students themselves.

The school hosted a sign unveiling Tuesday morning.

It was built by students in the school's manufacturing trades program.

School officials say the program gave the manufacturing students an opportunity to collaborate with businesses in the community and deliver a finished product to the school.

Students say it was truly a class project that took all of their skills.

Trey Baskin says he had a lot of fun.

“I learned a lot with my teacher Tristan. And we put a lot of pride into it, Baskin says. “I'm really proud of myself for what this class has done.

Another student, Kayden Rains, was surprised by how many people came out to support them. He says it was truly collaborative.

“Two or three of us couldn't do it. It took the whole class, Rains said.

The Murphysboro Fire Department was also on-site for the new sign. Chief Steve McBride says these skills are great for career building.

“It gives the kids real-world experience for things that they're going to be moving on to do, McBride says. “So this is good for the kids, it's good for the community, and it represents the school as well.

The school’s manufacturing and automotive teacher, Tristan Camden, says it was a great project for his first year of teaching.

“It's just another thing that they can add to their resume on the experiences that they've had, and they can pass on to their careers later on in life, Camden says. “It means a lot. Because everybody's going to see us for a very long time, and it's going to have a big impact on the school and what we're trying to make the school represent and show.

Camden says they will have more projects planned around the school district for next year.
