DU QUOIN, Ill. (WSIL)-- Some Du Quoin community members were shocked about a shooting on Hickory Street.
Authorities in Du Quoin are investigating a shooting that happened on Monday night. Officials tell our team one person is recovering from injuries.
A community was surprised to learn of a shooting in an alleyway behind Casey's General Store on Hickory Street.
“I was really shocked. And then when I found out who it was, it got shot. That was my little cousin, Whitfield said.
Brenda Whitfield says the young victim is her cousin, who was shot in the leg. She says before she knew the information, she was still worried about her safety.
“I saw on Facebook the mayor was talking about it and told everybody to lock their doors and lock their cars. So that got me scared. Especially, you know, he's out here running around, and we don't know who it is, Whitfield said.
Du Quoin police say they responded to Casey's after the victim arrived with the gunshot wound.
Erica Guetersloh says she has never seen a gas station with so many first responders.
“The parking lot was completely blocked off. The parking lot was full of either ambulances or cop cars. It was just a little crazy around here, Guetersloh said.
Some residents in the area say they heard the gunshots where police believe the incident took place, in the alleyway behind Casey's. While others, like Guetersloh, say she didn't know anything happened.
“I honestly didn't hear it. And we weren't sitting in my living room watching TV, and I got a message from my sister-in-law saying there's been a shooting. I'm like, Really? Guetersloh said.
Several community members have shared their concerns over not knowing a lot of details about what to look out for, but Guetersloh says knowing that the shooting was not random makes them feel less scared.
“But it's just that randomness, like, it just kind of dumbfounds me, Guetersloh said.
She and Whitfield both hope the police will find the suspect.
“We just don't have violence here like that. I mean, people fight, but it's never a gun because Du Quoin's quiet, Whitfield said.
Du Quoin police say they are investigating, and they believe the shooting was not a random act.Â
