SCOTT CITY, Mo. (WSIL) -- A residential structure fire broke out Wednesday afternoon on East Cherry Street in Scott City, prompting a significant emergency response.
Heavy smoke and possible entrapment led the Scott City Fire Department to upgrade the incident to a working fire, bringing mutual aid from multiple nearby fire departments and North Scott County Ambulance for standby.
The Scott City Fire Department stated bystander managed to rescue a child from a bedroom window before emergency personnel arrived. Upon arrival, the Scott City firefighters found heavy fire in a single-story home and immediately began rescue operations.
Due to the severity, the scene was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing in additional resources from surrounding fire departments. Air Evac was also on standby for potential additional victims.
Tragically, fire officials said two victims were found inside the residence. The Missouri State Fire Marshal and Scott County Coroner's Office were called to assist at the scene.
The Scott City Fire Department expressed gratitude to all agencies and personnel involved, including local businesses like Casey’s General Store for their support.
