Two southern Illinois sites added to National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom

CAIRO, IL. (WSIL) -- Two sites in southern Illinois have been added to the .

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker announced the Allison Family Homesite and the Contraband Camp, both in Cairo, are now on that list.

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom aims to preserve the history of resistance to slavery.

There are more than 700 locations across 39 states.

Governor Pritzker says the inclusion of these sites "ensures this history is preserved as a reminder of our past and honored as a lesson for our future."
