PITTSBURG, Ill. (WSIL) -- A man was able to escape after the car he was in caught fire when driving in Williamson County on Monday morning.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened on January 20, at 6:43 a.m., along the 13000-block of Pittsburg Road.

Once law enforcement got to the scene, they talked with the driver of the vehicle who said they smelled smoke which resembled an electrical fire when he was driving. The vehicle then began smoking and a fire started.

Authorities said flames erupted from the engine compartment and the driver was able to get out safely.

The Williamson County Fire Department arrived at the scene and were able to put out the fire. The water fighting the fire also covered the roadway which caused icing due to the bitter cold temperatures. However, the Williamson County Highway Department was able to clear the ice from the pavement and the roadway reopened.
