BENTON, Ill. (WSIL) -- Local water rescue teams are ramping up preparations to ensure resident safety with potential flooding over the weekend.
Benton Fire Department officials warn most areas will see close to record crests. Chief Shane Cockrum says it's important to recognize the impacts of high amounts of water.
"Six inches of water will sweep off their feet in flood water. 12 inches will cause you to lose control of your car. And 24 inches will sweep most vehicles off the roadway," says Chief Cockrum.
Chief Cockrum advises being aware of areas near streams and creeks. On your next commute, he recommends noting any areas that are prone to flood and plan an alternate route.
"Take a little bit of time. Think about the areas that you travel to and from work to and from to get your children and such and think about everything that comes through there water-wise that you maybe you don't really ever are concerned about," says Chief Cockrum.
The fire department says the first safety measure is to stay informed, understanding that a flood warning indicates an active threat that should be taken seriously. The second measure is to move to higher ground if you are in a low-lying area prone to flooding.
Chief Cockrum's third piece of advice is to "turn around, don't drown," meaning never attempt to enter flooded areas due to unpredictable depths.
In the event you are in danger, calling 911 will get crews like Benton water rescue out to help. They are on standby with swift water and cold water gear, as well as a dive boat equipped with sonar and a zodiac rescue boat for rescuing individuals in vehicles swept away by water.
Chief Cockrum mentions that in the past, they've had as many as 30 rescues in a year. He says last year was slow, and he hopes for the same this year. Through continuous training, the crew is confident in their ability to handle any emergency water situation.
Chief Cockrum adds, "We're training hard and we work hard and our goal is to provide the greatest amount of safety and service to you, the taxpayer, that we can."
