Yet another dangerously cold day expected

Morning Forecast January 21, 2025

WSIL(Carterville, Ill.) -- This morning, we are tracking dangerously cold temperatures once again across the region. Temperatures for most of us are once again in the single digits, with wind chills as low as negative 6 across our far northern counties in Southern Illinois. For these cold temperatures, we are tracking a Cold Weather Advisory that is in place until 3 this afternoon, areawide.

For today, you can expect to see temperatures linger in the single digits as we go through the morning and early afternoon. High temperatures today will likely only reach the lower teens, potentially as low as 10 degrees for some locations. This extreme cold will be attributed to yet another cold front that will track through the region from northwest to southeast later this morning. This will cause winds to be on the gusty side, potentially ad high as 20 miles per hour through the last morning and early afternoon. This will cause wind chill values to remain below zero for most of the day, but by the late afternoon, they should reach the single digits.

Skies through the morning should remain mostly cloudy, but skies will clear though the rest of the day as the cold front tracks further south and east. Behind the front, clear skies are expected for the afternoon and through the overnight hours. This will help temperatures remain cold as we kick off our Wednesday morning. Tomorrow, we will see morning lows  that will be in the low teens to upper single digits, with wind chills around zero. Tomorrow morning, there is another Cold Weather advisory that will be in effect until 6AM.

Tomorrow, there will be a mix of sun and clouds, and temperatures will begin to warm. Highs will still be well below average, but much warmer than we have been; highs should run around the lower 30s, and some spots across southeastern Missouri could break the freezing mark by a degree or two. Skies will be partly cloudy across most of the region tomorrow, but they should clear as a warm front lifts further north.

Behind the warm front, we are tracking temperatures that will warm into the mid to upper 30s for Thursday, but another cold front will move through late Thursday night, which will bring another cold snap for Friday. We also could see isolated snow showers on Thursday as the cold front tracks over the region. No impacts are expected.Â
