METROPOLIS (WSIL) -- Massac County softball is having quite the season.

The Patriots went undefeated in conference play and are getting ready for Super Sectionals.

We go Beyond the Highlights with the Massac County Softball Team to learn why they believe this is their year to win it all.

"Play together and play hard," Massac County senior catcher Jenna Bunting said.

"Win as a team, lose as a team, we're going to go down fighting and we want to win," Massac County senior pitcher Cali McCraw said.

The Massac County Patriots are in a championship state of mind. They are three victories away from a Class 2A State Championship.

Led by five seniors, this Patriots team is locked in.

"Out of my four years this has deffinitely been the time we've been the most focused just because we are all aware this is our last chance and it's just good to be making the most out of it," Massac County senior Emma Austin said.

"I think one thing we don't do is we don't use negative words so for example we won't say I hope we don't win I hope we do win so we change the mentality a little bit, so it drives us to win," McCraw said.

"I think it definitely helps that we've all been four year starters and we all really have a good sense playing together, it just makes it that much better with the younger girls," Austin added.

The seniors might lead the way but the Patriots believe their lineup is strong one through nine and there is no shortage of talent.

"I think that's what makes us different," Massac County senior first baseman Macy Pierce said. "Most teams in Southern Illinois and even Central Illinois have three or four good players, and the rest are just kind of there but if we have a few players that are down then we just have everyone just there to pick us up."

"Work together, we work better together," Massac County senior second baseman Kaylee Batha said. "We each have our individual strengths but there's weaknesses but I feel like the others pick up the others."

We've all heard history repeats itself. The Patriots are in the Super Sectional for the first time since 1985, but this time around, Massac County is looking to rewrite the ending to this story.

"I think that's the most exciting part for me, because in junior high we did that," McCraw said. "We are the only ones to win state. We already made history so we want to do it again."

"I think it makes us all feel really good, like wow we really just came back and did that for the first time since then," Bunting added. "It's a good feeling."

"Knowing that some of my friends moms played in that tournament against Freeburg and Freeburg put them out and we are playing Freeburg, it's kind of nerve racking but at the same time it makes me want to win more," McCraw said.
