GOREVILLE (WSIL) -- The Goreville boys basketball team is off to a fast 3-0 start, 2-0 in the Black Diamond. Five seniors on this team and recall not being able to compete at state. It fuels them, And they are hungry to win.
"We can shoot," Goreville senior Chase Quigley said.
"We kind of have a chip on our shoulder," Goreville senior Kanon Webb said.
"Really been focused on running the fast break," Quigley added.
"Last year with us not getting to finish what we started on finishing state, we're just trying to have the best season we can have trying to go undefeated this year," Goreville senior Carter Bishop said.
Goreville went 35-2 last season, won a super-sectional, and made it to state only to have the remainder of the season canceled. This team has unfinished business.
"They learned a lot from last year," Goreville Basketball Head Coach Todd Tripp said. "They really did. They understand they don't care who starts, they know how I coach, I am going to run guys in and out. They are all going to get their shot to play so they understand that. They are mature in that way."
"Anybody on this team can score," Bishop added. "We can have a different starting lineup every single night and still have an amazing team."
"We just want to win," Webb said. "We all have the same goal and I think that is what is important. Nobody has one similar goal where they go out and do their own thing. We all have the same goal and that is winning and getting better every day."
"We're just a family, we don't care who scores or who gets the points, we're just going for the win," Bishop added.
"It doesn't matter who comes in for the big man or not, we trust everybody to knock down the shot from three because we've all expanded our game really and worked on the three-point shot but it really helps to space out the floor and it really helps us to where they need to pick their poison when they are guarding us," Goreville senior Rhet Schuetz
Speaking of shooting Rhet's last name is pronounced shoots. It may not look like it from the spelling, but it's Shoots and with a last name like that, you better be a shooter.
"It's a lot of pressure I guess, I don't know, a lot of people don't get it right so that's one of the main downsides to it."
How do you have fun with a name like that?
"Just got to embrace it I guess because I've heard everything out of the books with it, I mean so you just got to embrace it and use it to your advantage I guess."
The Blackcats are so focused and locked in that not even rule changes like wearing a mask can phase them.
"It is tough having the mask and all that, but we've become a run and gun type team and that's what we enjoy to play like and that's just our style now," Bishop said.
There may not be a state title to compete for, but there's plenty at stake…Including Blackcat pride. They want to finish strong, create their own legacy.
"There's still 15-18 games on everybody's schedule and they want to win every one of them," Tripp said. "One thing that everybody has, is that conference title to play for so you shoot for that too. I don't agree with IHSA not having a regional week. I just feel like that is something that should've been done, playing for that regional plaque but we're happy to be out here though."
