Saluki Softball leaves for NCAA Tournament, will take on California on Friday afternoon

SIU leaves for BR

MARION, IL (WSIL) -Imagine trying to leave on trip.

You go to the airport only to find out the plane is delayed. We've all been there before.

This was the story for the Saluki softball team as well.

SIU was planning to leave at 10 a.m., but after a series of delays, they finally left our area for Baton Rouge at 3 p.m.

The Dawgs were delayed but not discouraged.

The Salukis full of smiles ahead of Wednesday's road trip.

The bags all packed as the team left out of Veterans Airport in Marion.

Southern faces California on Friday at 2:30. SIU enters the game with a better overall record than California.

Once they get to Baton Rouge, the Salukis will eat some amazing food in the crawfish capital of the world.

Southern's mission is to play some great softball and try to win the Regional.

"Just not make the moment too big you know; I like that we are playing Cal first and have a chance to get our feet on the ground. Just sticking to what we do and our pitching is going to keep us in it and our offense is not going to be held to zero runs so we're going to get the job done and it will be a lot of fun," Senior Elizabeth Warwick said.

"I'm just more excited you know. I think just anytime mid-majors make it to regionals, it just kind of puts them on the map a little bit and winning a regional would be even better. So just trying to take one game at a time and make our mark at this level," Freshman Maddia Groff said.

"It's a place we haven't been. It's a place that and we will enjoy and it won't be too big for us and I think we just like our matchup. I don't think we are really worried about any one pitcher or any one player that we have seen on the three other teams," head coach Jen Sewell said.
