CARBONDALE (WSIL) A week after the Saluki women learned their destination for the NCAA tournament, the Saluki men’s golf team now knows where they’ll be heading for regional action.
The Salukis are heading to the Louisville regional as the 13th seed. Although just the opportunity to go is an honor, the players said being ranked as low as they were in their regional has lit a fire in their bellies to be a vicious underdogs.
"I did not expect to be a thirteen seed to be honest with you. If that’s just the way rankings play out, that’s the way it plays out, but I thought we’d get a little more respect than that, so it kind of makes me want to go prove a lot of people wrong," said SIU senior golfer Peyton Wilhoit
"The good thing about regionals, the hardest thing to do is make it there. Now when you go, everybody is at zero. It doesn’t matter necessarily if you’re number one, or number twelve or number thirteen. I mean, everybody is going and playing fifty four holes of golf, and they’re going to take the five lowest team scores and they’re going to go to nationals," said SIU head men’s golf coach Justin Fetcho.
Ohio Valley Champion Jacksonville State will join SIU in Louisville as the 12th seed, while Illinois was taken as the four seed in the Myrtle Beach Regional.
Regionals will take place May 13-15.
