CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (WSIL) -- There are high expectations for SEMO football.

The Redhawks are picked to finish second in the OVC and tied with Austin Peay with 60 points.

SEMO will look to return to 2019 form when they won an OVC Championship and earned a playoff berth.

But the Redhawks come into this season with a lot of questions surrounding their football program.

New coaches were added and there is still no quarterback set in stone..

Head Coach Tom Matukewitz spoke about his approach to the season.

"The one blessing this job has done for me is winning had to die," SEMO Head Football Coach Tom Matukewitz said. "If winning was the goal then I would have shot myself 3 years ago. That’s not the goal of the program. Of course we want to win and we try to win but that frustration or concern comes from when you take your eyes off the process. We’re a process driven program and really we just got to focus on the things that we can control. There are enough good players and good coaches here to win every game in our league."

"Everybody that comes to this school, all feel like we could have gone somewhere else, somewhere bigger," SEMO WR Zack Smith said. "But we came here for a reason. So once everybody comes here and works together we have no choice but to do it for each other. So at the end of the day we have to be hungry. If you’re not hungry and you wake up everyday and just go through the motions you’re just hurting your team at the end of the day."

Redhawks open up the season at home Thursday September 2nd against SIU. War for the Wheel Rivalry. 6:30 Kickoff. Game available on ESPN +.
