Southern Illinois' Matt Schark shines; earns national hitter award

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WSIL) -- The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced its Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 11.

Oregon State senior catcher Wilson Weber and Southern Illinois University redshirt senior infielder Matt Schark were honored as National Co-Hitters of the Week. Mississippi State junior right-handed pitcher Evan Siary was named National Pitcher of the Week.

Schark, from St. Charles, Missouri, had an impressive performance for Southern Illinois. This past week he hit five home runs during a weekend during a weekend series with Evansville.

Schark had a record-setting week with hitting his 20th home run for the season and driving in 70 runs this year. This past week, Schark hit five home runs during a weekend series against Evansville and set a new single-season home run record for the Salukis. He also went 8 for 16 for a batting average of .500. He also drove in 11 runs and scored seven times.

Weber, from Gresham, Oregon, led the Beavers to a 3-0-1 record with a .471 batting average over the week. He hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs.

Siary achieved a career-high 15 strikeouts over eight innings in a win against Ole Miss. His performance tied for the most strikeouts by any SEC pitcher this season.
