MOUNT VERNON, IN (WSIL) -- In September 2019, Jessica Zirkelbach qualified for the Boston Marathon on a Sunday, the next she learned she had breast cancer.

Fast forward to Sunday, September 13, 2020 and Jessica ran a virtual Boston Marathon.

The Boston Marathon was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but it was not going to prevent Jessica from competing.

"Do the things that make you smile, set a goal so you can accomplish it and be proud of yourself," Jessica Zirkelbach said.

"She was worried she wasn't even going to finish and to see her finish strong is a testament to how strong she really is," Jessica's husband Matt said.

Jessica finished treatment in May, and is still gaining her strength. She ran a solid sixteen miles before her body began to weaken and she had to walk some of the course, but she was determined to finish.

"Supported by all of my awesome friends and family and it kind of makes it ok when you don't feel well and you have people lifting you up," Jessica said.
