(WSIL) -- The CDC recommmends cleaning frequently touched objects -- now on a daily basis.

To protect yourself from the coronavirus, the CDC says to have cleaning and hygiene supplies on hand.

"Just like it is with the flu, your common cleaning disinfectant wipes that you would normally do with the flu, cold, whatever virus it is that you might think of," says Carrie Eldridge with Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department.

Those products must be EP registered or have a coronavirus kill claim.

Whether you're at home, work or school, Angela Hale with Heartland Regional says to wipe or spray down surfaces any chance you get.

"Your doorknobs, your light switches, your phones, your iPads, your keyboards, even the refrigerator door handle. And I wouldn't forget the car. Do your steering wheel, do your car door handles."

The CDC also says if you don't have access to soap and water, use hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol.

"After you use the bathroom, before you eat, after you eat, after you just blew your nose in a tissue, before you go see your grandparents or anyone elderly."

Health officials have also emphasized uninfected people do not need face masks.

"When someone is sick with coronavirus, the person who is sick would be the one that would wear the mask," said Eldridge.

Once you're done cleaning, make sure you wash your hands afterwards.

"The most important aspect you can do is wash your hands for that 20 seconds," she said.

Health officials recommend cleaning hard surfaces in your home at least two to three times a day.
