MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- With the 5th Annual Give SI Campaign underway, and the 30-hour Giving Tuesday event around the corner, we highlight another organization benefiting from the event.

The in Herrin provides specialized services for area abused children or children who are a witness in a violent crime.

Sarah Anderson is the Executive Director with the child advocacy center. She says the community support from the Give SI event is important and helps with the children they serve.

“We are a small nonprofit with only five staff," Anderson said. "We have the highest caseloads we’ve ever seen, and so just feeling that community support is huge. We don’t always have the staff or capacity to go out and do fundraising on our own.

Anderson says they have helped more than 6,000 children since they opened 32 years ago. She says the financial donations help with cases with the children.

“Unrestricted funding really lets us go beyond those core services and meet the core needs of the children," Anderson added. "Whenever people are looking where to donate, those funds help child abuse victims in your community. And a lot of times it’s kids that don’t want to speak up about what they’re experiencing, and so it sometimes is a silent cause, but it’s so needed right now.

The funds raised will go towards helping provide snacks and meals for interviews. Every child also leaves with a bookbag full of items which may include personal hygiene products, coloring books, colors, toys and more.

The Give SI Day of Giving will start on December 2 and run through December 3. For more information, you can find it here.
