(WSIL) -- News 3 WSIL is proud to join with the Southern Illinois Community Foundation to help local non-profits through a new campaign called, GiveSI.
The southern Illinois food pantry network connects 95 food pantries across the region.
"We work with health, social service, and other community agencies and bring those 95 food pantries together to support infrastructure, education, and reducing food insecurity in our communities," said Toni Kaye Wright with the University of Illinois Extension.
Staff at the Western Egyptian E.O.C. in Du Quoin, say being apart of the network helps them operate more efficiently.
"Food pantries coming together in southern Illinois. And being able to talk to each other and tell what's not working here, and give ideas for it and stuff like that," said Western Egyptian Outreach Specialist Ashley Greer.
One common need is refrigeration.
"Our goal is to help those food pantries meet the needs of their refrigeration and freezer storage.," said Wright. "And that's what the majority of the money that we raise through this campaign will help."
"I mean we can talk about this year, we can talk about COVID-19, we can talk about the future of it too, but honestly, food insecurity is always going to be an issue," stated Greer.
More than 70 organizations will benefit from GiveSI. Those groups serve veterans, the homeless, animals in need, and many other good causes.
All donations made to GiveSI during a special 30-hour window will be eligible for matching funds. That starts next Monday, Nov. 30 and runs through Giving Tuesday.
