CARIO, ILLINOIS (WSIL) -- Community Health and Emergency Services is partnering up with the NAACP to put on a health fair in Cairo.

There will be several free health care programs such as the Strollin' through the Colon exhibit, blood pressure screenings, fit tests, Narcan training as well as COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.

Claire Hughes with Community Health and Emergency Services also known as CHESI says, its about making sure those who want the shot are able to get one.

"Alexander county has the lowest rate of COVID-19 vaccination in the state, and we want to make sure part of that isn't access to information," she explains. "So our motives behind this is that we're making this as accessible as possible to people."

This health fair is not only for adults but also children with prize wheels, games, and a bouncy house.

Hughes believes while these are fun activities, they serve an important purpose.

"Good health starts from birth and teaching good habits at an early age improves health outcomes overall," she adds. "So getting the kids engaged in this event is a priority to make sure we're reaching them. We're getting them the basic information they need to make good decisions about nutrition, why they see the doctor, and to engage them as well."

The Laborers Local 773 will also be handing out  boxes of fresh produce from Cusumano and Sons to the first 200 household who attend.

Other partners include the Southern 7 Health Department, Illinois Public Health Association, IPHCA and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The fair will be held on Friday, June 17th from 1-3 p.m. at the Shawnee Community College Extension.
