IDOT crews pick up 76 bags of litter off a section of roadway

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WSIL)—The Illinois Department of Transportation is launching an anti-littering social media campaign to reduce trash on the roadways.

It's called the ³¦²¹³¾±è²¹¾±²µ²Ô.Ìý

IDOT officials took to Facebook to introduce the campaign after crews cleaned trash off several roadways in Springfield.

In total, officials say crews picked up 76 bags of trash.

IDOT says that litter on roadways isn't just bad to look at; it also costs Illinoisans millions of dollars each year to clean up.

Officials say IDOT spent over $7 million in litter pickup in 2023.

Recently in Williamson County, the sheriff's office introduced results of a new work detail for inmates where they clean up the county's roadways.

The sheriff's office said that since December 12th, inmates in the program have collected over 4,300lbs. of trash in Williamson County.

IDOT is asking residents to be aware of littering in their communities. They recommend having a trash container in your vehicle to help reduce the waste.
