Carbondale Police investigating fatal train accident

An investigation is underway after a woman was hit and killed by a train.

Around 12:15 p.m. Monday, Carbondale Police responded to the area of South Illinois Ave. for a train crash involving a pedestrian.

Witnesses say a woman walked across the railroad tracks as a train traveled North. The train was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision and struck the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim is identified as Holly Stanley, 40, of Carbondale.

Both the Grand Avenue crossing and College Street crossing were temporarily closed during the investigation.

This investigation is currently active and ongoing.

Both intersections have now reopened.

CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- The city of Carbondale says the intersections of Grand Avenue at the railroad tracks and College St. at the railroad tracks are both closed due to a "serious crash."

Drivers are being asked to detour to Walnut or Main streets to avoid these intersections.
