Emergency Kit

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- On May 8, 2025, the 16th anniversary of "the May 8th Storm" or otherwise known as the "Super Derecho" is being observed. This significant date serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for emergencies, such as power outages.

The Egyptian Electric Cooperative Association encourages residents to assemble a basic emergency supply kit. Essential items include water—one gallon per person per day for at least three days—and a three-day supply of non-perishable food. A battery-powered or hand-crank radio with NOAA Weather Radio and extra batteries is also recommended.

A flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, and a whistle to signal for help are vital components of the kit. Dust masks, plastic sheeting, and duct tape can help filter contaminated air and shelter-in-place if necessary. Additionally, towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties are useful for personal sanitation.

A manual can opener is necessary if your kit includes canned food. Local maps will assist in navigation during an emergency. Also important, for those who rely on medical equipment requiring electricity, should have backup options in case of an extended power outage.

By taking the time to prepare now, residents can ensure safety and comfort during emergencies.
