MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- A 21-year-old from Carbondale was sentenced to 14 years in prison in regards to a stabbing incident which took place in February in Carbondale.

Jackson County State's Attorney Joseph Cervantez stated Cody Simon, 21, was sentenced to 14 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a sentencing hearing earlier this week at the Jackson County Courthouse.

Simon earlier pleaded guilty to the attempted first-degree murder charge in relation to the stabbing investigation back in February.

In an earlier release, Carbondale Police Department said the incident happened on February 21 at 12:07 a.m. Officers went to the 900-block of East Park Street where they had a report of a battery taking place.

Officers found a victim with multiple stab wounds, Carbondale police said. Officers then helped give aid to the victim until an ambulance got to the scene. The ambulance then took the victim to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Police said the victim had serious injuries.

Simon was taken into custody later in the day as a suspect in the incident. He was accused of stabbing the victim multiple times during a personal dispute.

Cervantez said Simon will have to service 85% of his sentenced which will be followed up with three years of mandatory supervised release.
