22-Year-Old Charged with Murder in Shooting Death of SIU Student

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- New information is coming out on a death investigation of a Southern Illinois University student.

On Wednesday morning, the Jackson County State's Attorney's Office, along with the Carbondale Police Department, held a joint press conference in regards to the death of Keeshanna Jackson.

Jackson County State's Attorney Joseph Cervantez announced Keavonte Nesby, 22 of Carbondale, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.

This comes after authorities interviewed more than one hundred people who are believed to have attended the party at the time when Keeshanna Jackson was shot and killed.

Jackson died on August 22, 2021, after being shot at a house party on Cherry Street in Carbondale. Since then, police and the FBI have offered $5,000 and $10,000 rewards for any information leading to arrests and convictions.

Cervantez said the shooting occurred during an altercation between two groups of people. Since this time, Cervantez said multiple people within these groups have been arrested.

Nesby is in custody and is due in court on September 4, 2024, at the Jackson County Courthouse.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
