32-Year-Old Man Faces Murder Charges After Deadly Shooting in Jackson County

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A 32-year-old faces murder charges after police respond to a deadly shooting in Jackson County.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office responded to 47 Oak Valley Drive in Carbondale for a report of a shooting on May 25 at 12:14 a.m.

Once first responders and deputies got to the scene, they found a victim unresponsive with a single gunshot wound, the sheriff's said. The victim was identified as Autumn Cole, 43 of Carbondale, and was taken to a local hospital with a life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office said the suspect was identified as Timothy Gassel, 32 of Murphysboro. He was reportedly found walking in the area and then taken into custody.

Gassel was then taken to the Jackson County Jail and faced a charge of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.

One day later, on May 26, Autumn Cole was pronounced dead at 12:59 p.m., the sheriff's office stated. It was after this the Jackson County State's Attorney then charged Gassel with two counts of First-Degree Murder.

Gassel is next due in court on June 25 at 1:15 in Jackson County for a preliminary hearing.
