44-year-old arrested, accused of trying to enter a home in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. -- A man was taken to jail after being accused of trying to force his way into a home on Monday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the incident took place on February 19, at 1:41 p.m. Officers from the Mount Vernon Police Department and deputies went to the 11000-block of E. Stone Road in Mount Vernon for a report of someone trespassing, along with a possible shot fired from a gun.

Once law enforcement got to the scene, they detained a suspect identified as Dewayne E. Corbett, 44 of Mount Vernon.

Corbett is accused of trying to force his way into a home and damaging a portion of the exterior of the structure. 

The sheriff's office said a handgun was shot by a victim at the scene as well.

Corbett reportedly had a minor injury but refused medical treatment, the sheriff's office noted.

Corbett was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center and faces a felony trespassing charge. Corbett is also accused of trying to get in two other structures before the aforementioned accusation.
