JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) A 23-year-old Cairo man was found guilty of first-degree murder in Jackson County on Thursday.

According to online court records, 23-year-old Daurice Morse was in a Jackson County courtroom on February 6, and was found guilty of two counts first-degree murder. This was in connection to the death of 18-year-old Jacob Gary of Cape Girardeau.

Jackson County State's Attorney Marsha Cascio-Hale stated the incident happened on October 23, 2022. She said Carbondale police were patrolling streets when a crowd erupted on the 500-block of South Illinois Avenue with hundreds gathering for unofficial Halloween.

Authorities reported hearing gunshots, at which point police then ran over and discovered Gary with a gunshot wound in the back, Cascio-Hale detailed.

Gary was transported to a Carbondale hospital where he was pronounced dead, prosecutors stated.

The Carbondale Police Department identified the shooter as Daurice Morse. Prosecutors say Morse was not arrested until more than five months later, due to him evading police.

Morse was later arrested by the U.S. Marshal Service.

After a verdict was reached Thursday, prosecutors say Morse faces between 45 years and natural life in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Morse is set to reappear in court for his sentencing hearing on April 23 at 1:15 p.m.
