CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- Authorities in Cape Girardeau arrested a man who is accused of firing off a gun at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department said their officers responded to shots fired at 12:00 a.m. on January 1, 2025, in the 100-block of S. Park Avenue.
Once officers got to the scene, they said they saw a man go into a home which was later identified as Stephen Magee, 35 of Cape Girardeau.
Magee later admitted to officers he shot a gun to bring in the new year, police in Cape Girardeau said.
Officers at the scene said they found 80 shell casings, however, there were no reports of injuries or any damage to property.
Magee was taken to the Cape Girardeau Police Department and faces an Unlawful Use of a Weapon charge.
Police also said Magee was the first person arrested by the Cape Girardeau Police Department in relation to "Blair's Law." Police explained "Blair's Law" below...
“Blair’s Law� specifies that a person commits the offense of unlawful discharge of a firearm if, with criminal negligence, he or she discharges a firearm within or into the limits of a municipality. Any such person shall be guilty of a class A misdemeanor for the first offense, a class E felony for the second offense, and a class D felony for any third or subsequent offenses.
