VIENNA, Ill. -- A southern Illinois man was sentenced to 50 years on Friday, nearly three months after he was found guilty on murder charges in Johnson County.
Larry Cavitt, of Goreville, was sentenced to 25 years, plus 25 years for firearm enhancement, for a total of 50 years in the Department of Corrections, according to online court records.
Cavitt was earlier found guilty on murder charges in February after he was accused of killing his half-brother over a COVID-19 vaccine dispute.
Johnson County State's Attorney Tambra Cain earlier said Larry Cavitt was found guilty of all three counts after the murder trial in a Johnson County Courtroom in February. Cavitt faced two first-degree murder charges and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.
Cavitt was accused of killing his half-brother, Joseph Geyman with a gun following an argument over the COVID-19 vaccine on August 28, 2021 in the 6000-block of Dutchman Lake Road.
In an earlier report, Johnson County Sheriff Pete Sopczak said the two men, who lived next door to each other, argued over the COVID-19 vaccine before Cavitt allegedly took out a handgun and shot Geyman in the head.
