CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- Some big changes are coming to a Cape Girardeau elementary school.

Officials tell News 3, not only will students and teachers reap the benefit, but members of the community will too.

The Jefferson Elementary School building was built in 1957, and since then it has seen a limited amount of modifications.

The Board of Education Superintendent Neil Glass said, once the nearly $12,000,000 renovation is completed, students, teachers and people living in the area will gain access to the renovated facilities. That includes a state-of-the-art aquatic center, gymnasium and a new cafeteria.

"We view it kind of like a civic center, if you will. Something that the community would value, would be very welcoming, we could offer different programs here and the community can feel like they are a part of something much bigger. And in saying that, this was born out of a bigger idea and that's called purpose built communities," said Glass.

Superintendent Glass went on to say, he is planning to begin taking bids next April, and have shovels in the ground by the summer.
