(WSIL) -- Mayfield Independent Schools will be starting school a week later this fall.

The first day of school for Mayfield Independent students is being moved from Wednesday, August 4, to Wednesday, August 11, for students in grades K-12. Preschool students will now start school on Wednesday, August 18.

This change is due to renovations taking place at Mayfield High School. The extra week is needed to confirm that all requirements are met to ensure students and staff can return to a safe and secure learning environment.

The district said, "We appreciate your patience and are looking forward to having all of our students back in class for the 21-22 school year."
