Finding ways to beat the heat during 90 degree temperatures

(WSIL)---When temperatures rise, it can be hard to find ways to beat the heat.

For some people, their jobs depend on staying outside.

Reynolds Roofing and Exteriors workers spend a lot of hours putting shingles on roofs, and sometimes 90 degree weather can feel 5 to 20 degrees warmer while working.

In order prevent getting over heated, there are some helpful tips and tricks if staying out of the sun isn't an option.

"A lot of the guys will wear long sleeve shirts to keep the sun off their skin, lots of water, frequent breaks, and try to hurry up and get done. The quicker we get done, the quicker we can get out of the sun," said Project Manager, Bryan "Kooter" Barton.

Kids Beat the Heat

Over at Robin's Nest in Carterville, it was time to get creative to stay cool.

They built a splash pad to help get kids outside and active, but the cool water helps prevent over heating.

But kids are still outside, and Robin's Nest's owner Robin Moore takes extra steps to prevent kids from getting sick outside.

"We ask the parents to put sunscreen on them before they get to school, then we reapply every time we go outside. And then when we come in from being outside, we sit down, everybody drinks water, whether they are thirsty or not, everybody has that time to sit, and have a little drink, cool off, and regain what the outdoors had provided by getting them tired," said Moore.

Young children are at higher risk for heat related illness, so it's important to keep an eye out for symptoms.

Look for headaches, becoming dizzy or lightheaded, or getting nauseous.

If this happens, make sure to get into the shade, sip some water, and use cool rags to cool down.
