(WSIL)--The largest US automaker plans to become "carbon neutral," and local industry analysts say that goal is within reach.

General Motors announced it will be do its part to achieve carbon neutrality by eliminating tail pipe emissions by 2035.

By 2025, the company plans to have 40% of its vehicles completely battery powered.

Officials at SIU say this plan is highly ambitious, but not impossible.

"It's going to take a lot of people, and a lot of governments and a lot of other industries working together to achieve this. It is ambitious but it can be accomplished if everybody comes together and works hard to achieve it," said Mike Behrmann, the Department Chair of SIU Automotive.

Traditional vehicles currently make up 75% of GM's carbon output.

GM aims to be completely carbon neutral by 2040.
