BLOOMINGTON (WSIL) -- The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) and Gift of Hope are teaming up to encourage students to register as organ and tissue donors.

The first-ever "SAY YES!" virtual registration drive to become an organ and tissue donor runs Friday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 9.

It's a joint effort between the IHSA and Gift of Hope to bring awareness and increase registration among 16 and 17-year-olds.

On January 2018, the “Drive for Life Act became law in the state of Illinois, allowing this age group to register for the state’s First-Person Consent Organ/Tissue Donor Registry when they receive their driver’s license or ID.

“Becoming an organ/tissue donor is a selfless act that can help save the lives of others. We’re fortunate to be able to partner with Gift of Hope and encourage everyone, including all high school students at least 16 years of age, to have a conversation with your family and loved ones and consider registering to become an organ/tissue donor, said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson.

By joining the registry, 16- and 17-year-olds will be giving consent to donate their organs and tissue at the time of their death, but procurement organizations must make a reasonable effort to contact a parent or guardian to ensure that they approve of the donation.

The parent or guardian may overturn the child’s decision.
