CHESTER, Ill. -- A historic covered bridge will soon be repaired after a storm caused significant damage to it last year.
Mary's River Covered Bridge will see construction starting in late fall to help restore the famous bridge, according to Dawn Johnson with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Samron Midwest Contracting from Murphysboro was recently awarded $311,702 by IDOT to help repair it, Johnson said.
The repairs include the roof, along with the fire suppression and security system on the bridge.Â
Back on July 1, 2023, a storm severely damaged the roof of the bridge, sending debris in the river and surrounding area.
The 170-year-old bridge was built by Wilhelm Misselhorn from Germany in 1854 and remained active for traffic through 1930. The state bought the bridge in 1936 to preserve it and make it a picnic area.Â
It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
This bridge connects what was an old toll road between Bremen and Chester and is the only bridge of its kind left in southern Illinois.
