ALEXANDER COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- The Alexander County Clerk's & Recorder's Office has started a project to scan and digitize land records dating back to 1950.

Office workers began this project on June 13, using computer equipment and scanners to create the digital documents.

Alexander County Clerk Zachary Price said this effort is not only about modernization, it’s also about protecting the local history.

“By creating secure digital copies, we’re ensuring these vital records are preserved for future generations, even in the event of a natural disaster, Price said.

After scanning the books, the images will be processed and collected in a database. Researchers will then be able to utilize the software program, view and print documents.

“I believe this is the biggest project Alexander County has seen in preserving our history," Price said. "I’m proud to get to witness this and see how it helps the future.

Price said they are digitizing roughly 200 books worth of records.

The project aims to serve the community with both progress and preservation in mind.
