CARRIER MILLS, Ill. (WSIL)--  There has been a lot of hot weather this summer and those hot conditions could impact local school districts as they prepare for the start of classes soon.

Over at Carrier Mills High School, the administration says the heat will not be a problem for them during the beginning of the school year.

The Assistant Principal Ben Vinyard says each classroom has air conditioning units.

“If you walk our hallways, you realize that our air conditioners are on, and we leave the doors open after classes. That way the hallways aren't bad either, Vineyard said.

He says they keep them on all day to make sure the students feel cool, but he says the only place in the school that might get hot is the gym.

“When it gets too warm for the kids in the gymnasium, they're allowed to go in the library where there's air conditioning, Vineyard says. “They can sit in there and work on some work or watch a movie, something along those lines.

But he says they are also creating a fitness room that also has air conditioning as another option.

Vineyard says for their fall athletic teams they encouraged their coaches to have practice before school, or later at night to be in the cooler temperatures.

“For us to play, it has to be a certain temperature and the humidity can't be a certain level, otherwise it gets too hot for the kids, Vineyard says. “And so by making sure that we abide by those rules that the IHSA has put out, we wanna make sure that all the kids are safe and healthy.

He says school starts back for them on August 12th, 2024.Â
