ZEIGLER, Ill. -- A house fire is under investigation by police and the State Fire Marshal after flames erupted near the kitchen area on Wednesday morning.

The Zeigler Fire Department reported fire units responded to a home in the 800-block of Maple Street in Zeigler, just after 8 a.m. on June 19.

A Zeigler police officer was reported as one of the first on scene and went into the home and woke up a person and brought him out to safety. During this time, smoke was coming from the kitchen area, the fire department reported.

When fire units first got there, light smoke was showing. Crews went inside the home and reportedly found a small fire in a room near the back of the home and was quickly extinguished.

While the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, the Illinois State Fire Marshal and Zeigler Police Department are investigating.

Assisting in the fire call was the Royalton Fire Department, Zeigler Police Department, State Fire Marshall's Office and City Commissioner Brad Wilson.
