CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Now that the warmer temperatures are here, many people will find themselves going hiking and visiting the popular recreational areas.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has put together a list of hiking tips for those who venture outdoors.

  • Stay on designated trails at all times. Cliffs are dangerous and sandstone can be slippery.
  • Check in at the visitorsâ€ center for information on daily trail conditions, weather forecasts, and special instructions.
  • Read all trail signage during hikes.
  • Wear appropriate footwear.
  • If hiking alone, let someone know where you intend to hike and when you expect to be home.
  • Bring a cell phone but be aware that service may be limited in many state parks.
  • Be sure to bring plenty of water, especially when the weather is hot.
