SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WSIL) -- It's that time of year when you are likely to see more deer out while you are driving.

Illinois State Police (ISP) informed the public on Saturday about how motorists are urged to use more caution, especially around dawn and dusk times when you are likely to see more deer out.

ISP says it's important to slow down as deer usually travel in groups; so, if you see one, there are probably more nearby.

Here are some tips provided by the Illinois State Police on what you should do if you encounter a deer while driving...

  • ðƒðŽð'ð“ ð’ð–ð„ð‘ð•ð„. Swerving can result in head-on crashes, impact with trees or guard rails, or even a rollover crash causing extensive injuries or even death.
  • The best driving response is to avoid the animal by steering or braking while remaining ð–ðˆð“ð‡ðˆð your traffic lane or shoulder. Further evasive maneuvering can be dangerous. Striking the deer can damage the automobile, but the occupants routinely remain uninjured.
  • If you hit a deer, contact the police or create your own crash report online using ISP’s Civilian Crash Reporting System. Remember the crash must be a single vehicle, property-damage-only crash where there were no injuries to anyone involved, and it occurred on either an Interstate or a U.S. or Illinois Route. The public can create a report by going to the ISP website at and clicking on Crash Reports under Quick Links, Complete A Crash Report Online.
  • Please remain vigilant while traveling on roadways during this fall season.
