JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. -- Authorities are alerting the public about a scam where a person is hand delivering to residents their property tax notice and asking for their payment.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said this is a scam and not standard procedure on how a person receives a property tax notice.

The sheriff's office said you will receive your property tax notice in the mail or you can visit the website . You may also pay your taxes online at the website as well, or most banks and at the Jefferson County Courthouse Treasure Office, as they will accept payment as well.

"NO ONE will be hand delivering your tax bill and NO ONE in any way will be accepting payment at your home. This is a scam!" the sheriff's office said. "For further information you can contact Bob Watt's office at 618-244-8010."
