The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said investigators were able to put some closure on a case involving a tombstone they've had since 2014.

On September 29, 2023, the case was closed as the tombstone was returned to the Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion. The sheriff's office said the tombstone was originally found at a residence in Pittsburg, Ill. in 2014 when the property there was acquired by a new owner.

In the past nine years, the sheriff's office haven't had any leads to identify where it ultimately belonged at. So, it's been stored in evidence for nearly a decade.

"While the full story may never be fully known investigators from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office were able to identify that it belongs on a gravesite at the Rose Hill Cemetery and it has been returned," the Williamson County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

The Williamson County Historical Society and the Rose Hill Cemetery staff assisted the sheriff's office.
