EDDYVILLE, Ky. (WSIL) -- City officials stated they had a catastrophic failure at their sewer treatment plant in Eddyville on Tuesday afternoon.
The City of Eddyville stated the failure was in their Sequential Batch Reactor Tank and the leak happened at 4 p.m. on January 6.
City officials said roughly 400,000 gallons of partially treated sewage initially leaked. Emergency response agencies, along with the KY Emergency Operations Center in Frankfort, came out to the location.
The amount of leaked partially treated sewage grew to 800,000 gallons before crews got it stopped.
The city stated all water treatment plants downstream and upstream on Lake Barkley were notified. This includes the City of Kuttawa, the Kentucky State Penitentiary, Lake Barkley Water, City of Princeton Water and the Crittenden/Livingston Water District.
Emergency response agencies, along with the City of Eddyville, are working together on a short-term solution and to schedule meetings. The meetings will then be to discuss a long-term solution.
The city informed the public there is no cause for concern with any of the drinking water throughout Lyon County, or any surrounding counties.
Assisting the City of Eddyville is the Kentucky Environmental Protection Agency-Division of Water, the Kentucky Environmental Protection Agency-Waste Management Division, Kentucky Rural Water Association, Lyon County Emergency Management and equipment from the Lyon County Road Department.
