(CNN) -- The EPA said Monday it plans to set new limits on wastewater pollution from coal power plants.

The move will effectively re-instate regulations that were previously in place but were rolled back by the Trump administration.

An EPA official said the reinstatement will affect roughly 100 coal-fired power plants. The agency is starting the process, but the change will probably take years to to into effect.

Until then, the less stringent wastewater regulations will remain in place leaving the potential for more toxins like mercury, arsenic and selenium to be released into the environment.
