CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- Two groups in Carbondale have joined forces to plan two events in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The MLK Day of Service is Monday, January 20, but Carbondale has a pre-celebration on Sunday. The Carbondale NAACP and The MLK Planning Committee have joined forces to make it happen.
Sunday is the annual Dr. King community celebration at 4 p.m. at the Carbondale Civic Center. Right now, the MLK Planning Committee is seeking nominations for the 2020 Spirit of Dr. King Community Service Award.
Monday, the NAACP will host the 38th annual Dr. King breakfast at 8 a.m. at the SIU Student Center in Ballroom D. This year's them is Census 2020 "Why Should My Family Be Counted"? The guest speaker will be Anna Jackson.
Both organizations are asking everyone to participate in community service on MLK Day.
